Active travel is the best way to get to school for the environment, your mind and your health.

What is Walk & Wheel?

Montroyal annually participates in Walk and Wheel to School events as part of International Walk to School Month (iWalk) from October 5th – 7th, 2015.  This provincial event held every year in October, Walk and Wheel to School encourages students, parents, staff, and community members to celebrate the many benefits of walking to school, such as:
  • Celebrating active transportation and encouraging daily physical activity
  • Promoting opportunities to practice safe walking and biking skills and identifying safe routes to school
  • Enhancing the connection between students, parents, schools, and communities in a fun and interactive way
  • Reducing school traffic congestion and vehicle emissions

Before School Activities on Sonora Road and Traffic Safety

Each day Sonora Road at both entry points off Cliffridge Ave will be closed off to traffic, allowing students and staff to reclaim the street to walk, ride and play before school from 8:00am until the bell at 8:40.

Daily activities are organized including coffee, Mrs. Power’s aerobics, basketball, road hockey, skipping ropes, hoola-hoop contests, street art, dance party with your grads and a bike / scooter obstacle course to promote health and wellness. We will have visits from Mayor Walton, the police, fire department, and Elmer the Safety Elephant help the students to understand road safety.

THEMES:
  • Monday – wear your favorite sports team jersey or colours
  • Tuesday – wear something bright - our future is bright
  • Wednesday – wear the Montroyal colour (blue or green) or your Montroyal t-shirt

If you are unable to walk the entire way to school please park and walk in the following areas:
  • Cliffridge / Ranger – come through the forest to the back field
  • Prospect Park – walk east along Prospect and use the flagger to cross safety
  • East side of Prospect Ave or Canyon Blvd
  • Cliffridge south by Sonora on past the bus stop
  • Cliffridge north by Sonora – do not block crosswalk or bus stop
Please remember to be respectful of our neighbours; by keeping driveways and bus stops clear. Click here for all the Traffic Safety Procedures. This is a fun event, rain or shine, which the kids love. Support the event and maybe your child will want to “Be the Best Me They Can Be”.

Volunteers Needed

We are looking for parent volunteers to assist with:
  • Traffic Patrol – 4 each day from 7:50 to 9:00
  • Grade 7 Supervision for set-up and clean-up – 1 each day from 7:50 to 9:00
If you can help email Carol Sartor.
Walk & Wheel Week is organized by PAC.
